Nock and Ideas

AJNock:

Here is the golden rule of sound citizenship, the first and greatest lesson in study of politics: you get the same order of criminality from any state to which you give power to exercise it; and whatever power you give to the state to things carries with it equivalent power to do things to you.

Culture looks steadily onward from instrumental knowledge to formative knowledge, from scientific truth to poetic truth. The end of culture is the establishment of right views of life and right demands on life, or in a word, civilization, by which we mean humane life, lived to the highest power by as many persons as possible.

Notes:

Modernity:

The greatest benefit we have received from history is the enthusiasm which it evolks.

Chomsky:

The true end of man, or that which is prescribed by the eternal and immutable dictates of reason, and not suggested by vague and transient desires, is the highest and most harmonious development of his powers to a complete and consistent whole.
